Emerald - Birthstone for May
An Emerald symbolises not only royalty but also wit, eloquence, and foresight. Considered “The Jewel of Kings” it also serves as the birthstone for the month of May. This gem has long been regarded as a superior jewel. Rare and beautiful the Emerald’s stunning green hue has also given it an honoured status amongst many cultures worldwide.
Though known as the Jewel of Kings, the Emerald is most famous for adorning the neck of none other than the ‘Queen of Kings’ the famously beautiful Queen Cleopatra. It is said that she adorned herself and her palace with emeralds and also gave them as gifts to foreign dignitaries as a display of wealth and power.
The word ‘’emerald’’ is derived (from old French esmeaude and middle English Emeraude ) from vulgar Latin esmarldalesmaraldus, a variant of Latin samaragdus from ancient Greek (samaragdos- Green gem ) from a Semitic language.
