Named after the colour of sea water, aquamarine is the blue, blueish-green member of the beryl family.  It is the birth stone for the month of March. An Aquamarine is reasonably durable gemstone. The name Aquamarine was derived from two Latin words, aqua which means ‘’water’’ and mare which means ‘’sea’’.

They are mostly found in Brazil high quality aquamarines can also be found in India, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Madagascar, Pakistan, Zambia, and Mozambique. Since ancient times, the healing properties of Aquamarine have been acknowledged by healers and philosophers alike.

The colour of the Aquamarine stone ranges from blue to blue-green and can be pale to light blue, dark blue, green blue, or blue-green. The larger stones often have a darker tone. The Aquamarine’s colour can usually be increased giving it a deeper lustre through heat treatment, which is typically done to remove the green tints from the gemstone. Most Aquamarines however, are left untreated to keep its natural hue intact.

Healing Property of Aquamarine

Since ancient times, the healing properties of the March birthstone have been acknowledged by healers and philosophers alike. Aquamarine has historically been used as a symbol of youth and happiness. Its colour, which has also along with its name, made Western Culture connect it with the ocean. Ancient Romans believed that aquamarine could protect people who are traveling across the sea. They also used aquamarine to prevent illness.
