Moonstone - Birthstone for June
Found all over the world, the moonstone is prized for its blue to white adularescence. It has a lovely soft glow much like moonlight. Despite being a fragile stone, it is a very popular choice for jewellery. It is the birthstone for the month of June. The Moonstone is the popular name given to a gem-quality variety of feldspar- a group of mineral orthoclase. It is composed of alternating layers of orthoclase and albite giving it the appearance of having a soft glow of light, just below the surface of a polished gemstone.
The etymology of moonstone seems self-explanatory. The name came from the lustrous “Moon Light’’ sheen of the adularescence. Moonstone is also known as selenite, a name derived from the Greek, ‘Selene’ meaning ‘’moon’’ and in Hindi as ‘Chandrakant’ meaning ‘’beloved of the moon’’.
