Amethyst - Birthstone for February
Amethyst is crystalline quartz in colours ranging from pale lilac or violet to deep reddish purple. The birthstone for the month of February it is a fine, durable gemstone.
Amethyst gets its name from Greek. Amethystos, meaning “not drunk or intoxicated’’ The Greeks named this gemstone in the age-old belief that wearing it or drinking from a cup carved from it, would protect one from becoming drunk or act as an antidote to intoxication possibly due to its colour resembling that of wine.
